Writer of Things…

this is meI have been an attorney specializing in legal writing for fifteen years, first in southern California and more recently in my native Montana. In 2013, I cut back on legal work to write Arrow of Rieve, the first novel in a fantasy series called The Rising.

In addition to the remaining books in The Rising series, I have two other works-in-progress. One is a science fiction tale of rebellion set on a distant planet in the far future, starring a female protagonist who suffers a growing addiction to the drug that has turned her into a weapon against the corrupt ruling dynasty—and she has a taste for pleasure tinged with pain. The other is a cozy mystery…with a genre-bending twist.

I love nonconformists, original thinkers, gardening, politics, technology, making my own soap, fiber arts, freedom of expression, fantasy, science fiction, the ones who take the darkest watch, laughter in the face of tribulation, the sharp pierce of nostalgia, earthworms, bees, love stories, adventure, imaginary worlds, courage and triumph.

I contribute to the political blog The Liberty Papers (the only opinions I endorse are my own) and live in Montana with my family and a house full of ungrateful pets. Find me on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Some of my favorite books have been:

The Witch of Blackbird Pond, The Dark Is Rising, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Charlotte’s Web, A Ring of Endless Light, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Sunne in Splendor, Here Be Dragons, Tam Lin, We The Living, The Doomsday Book, Taliesin, Lord of the Rings, The Belgariad, The Mallorean, The Elenium, The Golden Compass, A Circle of Light, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, A Certain Chemistry, The Amber Spyglass, The Subtle Knife, Eye of the World, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, Daggerspell, Tigana, When Christ and His Saints Slept, Time and Chance, Inkheart, A Secret History, Harry Potter, Love and Other Near Death Experiences, A Memoir of the Craft, Mercy Thompson, A Game of Thrones, Kushiel’s Dart, The Imriel Trilogy, Branded By Fire, Dark Currents: Agent of Hel, Force of Nature, Slammed, A Tough Guide to Fantasyland, Naamah’s Blessing, Seraphina, The Mercy Thompson Series, Santa Oliva, Fire and Hemlock, Code Name Verity, Annihilation, A Talent For War, Ancillary Justice, Station Eleven.

Hmmm… What should I read next…?
